Q What is genetic testing? How can it help me?

A :Myriad myRisk® Hereditary Cancer tests for mutations in multiple genes associated with an increased risk for 8 different cancers.

Q: Who is genetic testing intended for?

A: MyRisk testing is for both women and men. If a patient has a personal or family history of cancer, hereditary cancer testing is the only way to determine if that patient has hereditary, familial or general population risk of developing a future cancer. Individuals with familial or hereditary cancer risk have a much greater chance of developing cancer during their lifetime.

Q How will the genetic testing work?

If you qualify for free testing or if you have insurance that will cover it Myriad staff will first collect a blood or saliva sample from the patient using a special kit which will be shipped to Myriad for analysis. The patient’s test results will then be mailed to your doctor's office , or can be found online through your MyriadPro® account within approximately 2 weeks. The results will give you  valuable information to use to create a personalized plan to prevent cancer, identify cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage or prevent a secondary cancer from occurring.
