Darin T. Zimmerman,Ph.D.
(Dean and Traubert Chair)
Prior to joining The Citadel in July 2018, Darin was a member of the faculty and served in various administrative roles at Penn State Altoona – as Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (2017-2018), Associate Dean for Research (2014-2018), Division Head for Mathematics and Natural Sciences (2009-2014), and as Physics Department Chair (2000-2009).
Passionate about teaching, he has written an algebra-based physics textbook entitled, Physics: The Core Concepts, for students majoring in science disciplines outside engineering and the physical sciences. As an experimental physicist, his research has spanned many different lines of inquiry, including inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy, microwave sintering of powdered metals, magnetorheological fluids and elastomers, percolation phenomena in composite materials, and electro-optical properties of metallic nanoantennas.
His work was continuously supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and Penn State University, where he developed state-of-the-art research facilities and mentored over 40 undergraduates, four graduate students, and one post-doctoral researcher. He lives in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina with his wife Cathie and their three dogs. They are often visited by one or more of their seven adult children, the happy result of their blended family.
